The Greek myths have been retold for thousands of years, underpinning the modern world and inspiring novels, plays, films and art, but they rarely focus on the remarkable women at the heart of these ancient stories. And when they do, those women are often painted as monstrous, vengeful and evil. But Pandora – the first woman, who according to legend unloosed chaos upon the world – was no villain, and even Medea’s story is more nuanced than generations of retellings suggest. Now, Natalie Haynes, star of the BBC Radio 4 series Natalie Haynes Stands up for the Classics, returns to Melrose to retell major classic stories in her inimitable, fast-paced, witty style, putting the women of the Greek myths on equal footing with the menfolk.
