Cecil’s debut novel An Italian Scandal has been described by Rupert Everett as ‘My historical novel of the year – a journey to Italy to fall in love with.’ It begins in London in 1859. Carina Temple refuses to conform to society’s expectation of a single young lady. Her uncle tells her that her reputation is ruined and that she must flee to Italy until the tide of gossip recedes. But Italy turns out to be a tempestuous place and Carina becomes entangled with politics and insurrection. ‘A heady brew of passion and treachery, intrigue and adventure’, wrote Alan Titchmarsh. Chaired by Magnus Linklater.
