The Treeline: The Last Forest and the Future of Life on Earth is both elegiac and hopeful. The Arctic treeline is the frontline of climate change. For fifty years the trees have been retreating, creeping slowly towards the North Pole. They encircle the globe in an almost unbroken green ring and are the world’s second largest biome. Scientists are only beginning to understand the huge significance of the northern forests of Scots pine, birch, larch, spruce, poplar and rowan. In Scotland, Scandinavia, Siberia, Alaska, Canada and Greenland, Ben discovers what these trees and the people who live and work under them have to tell us about the past, present and future of our planet.
